LECTURES ON HONOURBASED VIOLENCE
Living in an honour context in Sweden often means navigating between two worlds, where an individual’s identity and values may conflict with the norms expected and upheld within their family and culture. This lecture explores the experience of growing up with this constant balancing act, how it manifests in daily life, and the complex challenges young people in honour contexts face.
The lecture also addresses the mechanisms of violence, its consequences, and the process of breaking free—with a special focus on strategies for supporting and responding to youth living under honour-related oppression and control.
This workshop ranges from two-hour lectures to full-day programs and includes interactive elements that actively engage participants. Through thought-provoking exercises and dilemmas, participants are encouraged to reflect and discuss in small groups. Concrete guiding questions are also provided to help identify and address honour-related violence in conversations with young people.
"Maria is creative, driven, and was deeply committed in her role as a counsellor during all the years we worked together at Origo. She has extensive experience supporting children and young people who are limited by honour norms. She has also provided consultative support to professionals in individual cases and contributed to raising awareness in the field through the many lectures and training sessions she was responsible for planning and delivering, targeting various authorities and voluntary organizations.
I often heard from different partners that Maria is an incredibly skilled speaker—both inspiring and moving. She shares not only her professional experiences but also her personal story, something that has been deeply appreciated."
